Album Cover Design Brief Template: What to Send Your Designer in 2026

A strong album cover starts before the designer opens a file. The artist needs to communicate the release, visual direction, required text, references, restrictions and final deliverables clearly enough that the designer can make intentional decisions.

This copyable brief is built for singles, EPs, mixtapes and albums. It helps independent artists organize the creative direction, source assets, platform requirements and revision feedback before design work begins.

Why an Album-Cover Brief Matters

“Make it hard” is not a creative brief. Neither is sending five unrelated screenshots with no explanation. A useful brief gives the designer boundaries without trying to design the cover for them.

The goal is to answer five questions: What is the release? Who is the artist? What should it feel like? What must appear? Where will the artwork be used?

Copyable Album Cover Design Brief Template

1. Release information

Artist name:
Release title:
Release type: Single / EP / Mixtape / Album
Primary genre:
Planned release date:
Explicit release: Yes / No
Distributor: if known

2. What the music feels like

Describe the project in three to five sentences. Explain the mood, subject matter, energy and any story behind the title. Avoid relying only on genre labels or the name of another artist.

Three mood words: ______ / ______ / ______

3. Visual direction

Preferred direction: Photography / Illustration / Typography / Collage / Minimal / Cinematic / Other
Color direction:
Environment or setting:
Objects or symbols that matter:
Things to avoid:

4. Required text

List the exact spelling and capitalization for any text that must appear. Do not make the designer guess.

Artist name:
Release title:
Featured artist:
Other approved text:

5. Reference images

For every reference, explain why you chose it. “I like the lighting” is useful. “Copy this cover” is not.

  • Reference 1 — what to learn from it:
  • Reference 2 — what to learn from it:
  • Reference 3 — what to learn from it:

6. Source assets

  • Original high-resolution photography
  • Artist logo or wordmark

  • Approved typography files or brand guidelines
  • Credits or metadata reference
  • Any licensed artwork with documented permission

7. Deliverables requested

  • Final square cover artwork
  • High-resolution JPG or PNG
  • Social announcement crop
  • Story/Reel promotional crop if needed
  • Clean version without text if contracted
  • Editable/source file only if included in the agreement

Current Cover-Art Specifications to Account For

Spotify

Spotify currently requires square 1:1 cover art between 640 and 10,000 pixels in width and height. It accepts TIFF, PNG or JPG using lossless encoding and specifies sRGB at 24 bits per pixel. Spotify also advises against upscaling small images.

Apple Music

Apple’s current delivery guidance recommends a 3000 × 3000 pixel square album cover and lists 1400 × 1400 pixels as the minimum. Artwork should be JPEG or PNG and use RGB color space. Apple also advises against enlarging a small image merely to meet the minimum dimensions.

Album Cover Review Checklist Before Approval

  • Artist name and title are spelled exactly as intended.
  • The composition still reads clearly as a small thumbnail.
  • Faces and important objects are not unintentionally cropped.
  • The source image is genuinely high resolution rather than artificially enlarged.
  • The file is square and exported in the required format and color space.
  • Any third-party photography, artwork, logos or likenesses are cleared for use.
  • The explicit-content treatment matches the release and distributor requirements.
  • The artist has saved the final approved version separately from drafts.

How to Give Useful Revision Feedback

Revision notes should identify the problem rather than prescribe random effects. Compare these two approaches:

Weak: “Can you make it pop more?”

Useful: “The artist name is getting lost at thumbnail size. Can we increase hierarchy while keeping the image dominant?”

Group revision notes into one message whenever possible. Separate required corrections from personal preferences.

Five Questions to Answer Before Hiring a Cover Designer

  1. Do I know the final artist and release names?
  2. Can I explain the music without only naming another artist?
  3. Do I have high-resolution source images?
  4. Do I know where the artwork will be distributed?
  5. Do I understand what final files are included in the designer's price?
